Water Matters
Packaging clean water

For families fighting against water-related diseases, clean water is a matter of survival. The mission of Water Matters is to work with people in affected areas to distribute water cleaning initiatives to the most vulnerable. Water Matters runs on a 100% non-profit principle, meaning that every cent donated funds water cleaning filters for families without clean water. A single filter lasts for over ten years and purifies water from almost any source.
We partnered with Water Matters to aid their mission, creating a new filter donation package to raise funding for their work. The concept for this package emerged through the telling of two stories and two purposes. A package made to be carried, reused, tossed in a backpack, placed in a shelter and cared for over time. While at the same time, serving as an object that tells a story of a gift bigger than itself:
When you buy your filter, you also donate one to someone who needs it most.

The idea: Buy a filter, give a filter
When the founders of Water Matters were raising money for their movement, they realised that showing the actual water filters they used made an impact on how people related to their story. This realisation created the seed for our common initiative.

A package meant to leave the shelf
The filter package was designed to help Water Matters tell their story of their initiative moving across the world. Utilising imagery relating to containers, freight and shipping, this idea was further pushed whilst keeping a graphic language appropriate on store shelves and in the hands of a user.

Joining a clean water revolution
Learning from the people close to the issue is important to understand who needs water, as well as how the structures in their societies work. Building these relations is key to helping people spread the initiative further on their home turf, leading to self sustainable and long-lasting projects. Clean water is the first step towards new life, leading to new opportunities and a thriving society.

“We are very happy with Kalk’s involvement in supporting our mission. They’re creative, proactive, and most importantly very nice to work and collaborate with.”
